Ethnomusicology: The study of music from different cultures and backgrounds.
I am a student at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, United Kingdom, and during the last five weeks of my second year, I took an Ethnomusicology course. It was really fun - I particularly enjoyed learning about a composer from my hometown of Bearsden, Ian Davison. (For anyone who's interested, the fieldnotes I wrote about him can be found here.)
But now, as a final assignment, I have been instructed to write an Ethnomusicology report on either a musical location, event or ensemble. After some deliberation, I eventually chose to research the Singing Group at the church I attend - St Mary's. (On King Street, just across from the MacRobert Building [i.e. University of Aberdeen music department.)
This website documents how I went about researching the Singing Group and provides transcripts of the various interviews I carried out. There is also a section with a selection of recordings of the Singing Group and, finally, there is a link to the actual report that I submitted.
